It was very well written. The characters were engaging and I couldn't put it down. That being said, I am not sure I enjoyed it. There was a lot of sadness. I didn't understand some of the heroines decisions. SPOILER ALERT: There was such a beautiful love story and then it was taken away once again from her. There didn't seem to be a lot of point to her living away from her son when she had the opportunity to go back to him. She put her faith and trust in God and spoke many times about being truthful yet she deliberately withheld truth from her daughter claiming the reason was fear. If you put your faith and trust in God, you do or say the right thing regardless of fear. The scene where Prairie Flower scolded Jessie for not honoring Ride the Winds memory hit a huge mark for me. I felt the same way. In the end I just was left saddened by it all. So much tragedy without a lot of purpose. I guess I have enough struggles and sadness in real life. I read to escape it. That being said I still gave the book a 4 star rating because it was so well written. It deserves the 4 stars. Just too much tragedy for my taste.

I just finished reading this novel and I don't know how to explain the flutter in my heart. I have never read a book that I couldn't put down. I felt like I was walking with Jesse, or I should say Walks the Fire through her whole life. I traveled West with her, cried with her for the terrible marriage, and the trauma that she endured. Her life in captivity was remarkable and she found her soul mate. I think her faith carried her courage and enabled her to bring peace to her captives. Her advice to her daughter was perfect.
I loved the ending as well. I cannot wait to read the next book which a sequel. Thank you Stephanie Whitman. This has to be more stars in rating.
I was so happy when this series FINALLY came to . I had first read it when the bookstore I buy for carried it and I couldn't wait to read it again, but I'm so spoiled now that I don't like to read anything except on my . It's just easier! Anyway, it finally came to and I read it again. It's actually a very good plot, though it surely turns out differently than your usual pioneers-heading-west-by-wagon-train story. One of the reviewers said she thought it had a slow start, but I was hooked from the first page. One of the things I love most about the story is that the heroine is "ordinary". Oh, her personality is far from ordinary, once she is allowed to grow into it, but as far as looks go, she's just ordinary. Most of the women in books are described with lines like "her slim beauty captivated him" or "as she came into the room, her beauty overshone those of all the other women." Blah blah blah. We can't all be skinny beauties with flawless teeth, hair, skin, and nails. AND be highly intelligent with sweet personalities, too. This woman is just plain Jessie King. She's married to Homer, who chose her after no one else wanted her. She keeps quiet and lets him boss her around like she's an idiot because that's the time she lives in and she's no one special anyway. Then something horrible happens to her. And it turns out to be the best thing that has ever happened to her. Eventually. There are two more books after this one and they're all terrific. But, one thing these are Christian books and Jessie takes her Christianity and her relationship with God VERY seriously. If that turns you off, you may have difficulty enjoying the book.
It's amazing! It's consuming! This author is brilliant. I will never forget these characters. I have never bought a sequel before... But I will buy the next book Soaring Eagle. I'm hooked on this excellent author!
After reading some of the less positive comments, I want to comment further. I would never describe this book as a tearjerker. It was all about life... often seen from a Lakota perspective and definitely a Christian perspective. Life doesn't work without Christ. Yes, there were some sad things that happened throughout the book, but the ending was filled with love and hope...and it was very romantic. It made you want to hug yourself! If you look at the big picture, there was victory, not despondency. There is much to glean from this book.
This is a fantastic Historical book. Yes there is sadness - but in reality it is the story about a young woman and the things that happen to her. You have to think about it in terms of possibly people you know. Life happens. - But with this woman, she trusted God and put her faith in Him taking care of her.
-- As for the sadness, I accepted it as part of a person's life - but I enjoyed reading how she overcame and when she had her doubts about God, she eventually got right with Him and depended on Him.
--There is also a lot of love, joy, learning, growing, sharing, & well worth reading. And as I said, Life happens and when it does you either keep living or you whither up and die.
It is hard to put in words how this series has touched me, however I will try. If I could write like this author it would be a lot easier for me! This series should be read by all! I laughed, I cried and my spirit is renewed! ) I felt like I was living each character's life as I read this series, and everyone should have a Joseph Freeman in their lives, his character was Gods love personified! The story and the scriptures has encouraged and uplifted me. Thank you Miss Whitson for using your God given talent to bless your readers. ) Love your sister in the Lord!
